Summer vs. Winter Tires

On Rims vs. Off Rims – What It Means

Tire performance is heavily affected by temperature and road conditions. In Canada, switching between winter and summer tires is essential for safety and tire longevity.

  • Winter tires are designed with deeper tread patterns and softer rubber compounds to maintain grip in cold temperatures (below 7°C), snow, and ice.

  • Summer tires (or all-seasons) are made for warmer conditions. Using winter tires in summer leads to faster wear, reduced performance, and increased fuel consumption.

Tire changes are typically recommended twice a year — once in spring (March–May) and again in fall (October–November).

There are two types of seasonal tire swaps:

  • On Rims: Your seasonal tires are already mounted on a separate set of rims. This makes the change quicker and easier — it’s simply a matter of removing one set and installing the other.

  • Off Rims: Your tires are not mounted, meaning the technician must remove the current tires from your existing rims and then mount and balance the new tires. This process takes longer and involves additional equipment.

Knowing whether your tires are on or off rims helps determine the time and service needed for the change.
